Since you gave the ok, here's some paper mario partners I thought of; Koop, Merlyon, and Pearly. There's a lot of reading here, so if you're pressed on time and can't read all this, I absolutely understand.

Koop's a confident and peppy koopa currently attending East Koopaversity(All the way, Troopers!). His form of attack would be throwing his shell at enemies from afar, trading up hitting multiple enemies on the ground like most koopa partners do for being able to safely attack enemies at any position/altitude. one of his other abilities would be a taunt that would have all single-target attacks only hit him. his field ability could be throwing his shell(or even Mario) to out-of-reach areas. I could see him coming back to his hometown upon getting letters from his folks about the current baddy's deeds and going to put a stop to it, eagerly joining Mario on his journey as a result.
Merlyon is a shy member of the Merlon lineage of wizards who never inherited his family's powers over fate and fortune, living as an ashamed recluse as a result: however, he is instead very gifted in elemental magic. His standard attack in battle would be a bolt of elemental energy where the action prompt would be a circle with three evenly-spaced lights on it, each representing the elements {Fire, Ice, and Lightning}. His other abilities would be creating elemental barriers for the party and infusing Mario's attacks with elemental damage. I could see a small hint of his reclusive habits being shown off in the town you'd eventually meet him in where if you'd visit the shop, some items would be replaced with coin stacks and interacting with them would prompt the shopkeeper to talk about some mysterious person who comes to the shop at night and leaves the appropriate amount of coins for the now-missing item and even tidies up and locks the shop; because of this, the shopkeeper leaves the door unlocked for them. He'd initially be very reluctant to join you, his long-held feelings of worthless and shame rebuking Mario's insistence. Koop, who you recruited in the previous chapter, would have some special dialogue here which would have Merlyon heavily question his apprehensions but still not join. It would be after seeing the chapter baddies terrorize the town and how they do so firsthand(which would be through using elemental effects to keep people from stopping them) that Merlyon would join, motivated by Koop's words of confidence and by seeing kind people in peril from enemies his talents can deal with; in turn, shaking off his feelings of shame and starting to find genuine worth in himself and his abilities. His field ability would be interacting with various things in the overworld like energizing certain electronics, igniting/thawing various obstructions, or freezing certain bodies of water temporarily. Another silly in-battle perk for him could be that if you get to 99 star points in a battle with him active, he'd just give Mario his star point brooch and give him a levelup (Am I the only one who thought those brooches the Merl wizards wore looked like star points?).
Pearly would be a partner you'd meet early in the game. He's a chain chomp that was raised alongside poochys from Yoshi's Island and grew up to be a total sweetheart. Hes adored by the town's children who play with him and even doodle on him, to his delight. He would take a liking to Mario after the two of confront the baddies harassing his hometown and scaring his owners and his little friends, joining his journey with his owners' blessings and the town children's heartfelt farewells.

If you took the time to read all of this, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!! Sorry to gab on for so long. You're an amazing person and it's so wonderful that you do this sort of thing and try your best to showcase everyone here's fantastic work! Happy hopes to all of you!

one more thing I forgot concerning Pearly is that he could have a sort of visual gimmick like the yoshi partner in TTYD with the doodles on him, where there could be different randomized sets of them you could get depending on various factors.
