Death Thirteen. Despite its name and number it is a positive card, signifying changes and endings, and the beginning of a new life. Nurture life and it will bring about something beautiful. Death also, however, indicates sudden and unexpected upheaval. Death is fond of surprises.

Like that Simpson's bit, death is usually interpreted in a negative connotation. For some it may very well be. But life and death are inseparable, celebrate one and be celebrated in the other.

Now for a second perspective.

Death itself primarily involves the concept of change; Out with the old, in with the new. Every ending results in a new beginning. Though the Arcana is not entirely pure; it can additionally refer to mortality, destruction, even corruption.

Reversing this Arcana results in different meanings: Unchanging circumstances, slumber, lethargy, inaction, and despair.

For frequent depictions of Death, they either focus on the titular character’s harvesting of souls or how they are the fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse; Death, the last of the four, would ride on a pale horse alongside Hades and claim the lives of those who endured the destruction that the other three Horsemen would cause.
