Here's an example of how much of a difference layer options can make. On the right I turned the shadows to a dark indigo and used the Vivid Light setting, which makes the colors blend with the colors under it. Then just added some neon pink highlights. Both look presentable, but the left looks like she's in natural midday light, whereas the right looks like she's in some cyberpunk street lights.
