Much better defense than say, "you'll feel sorry for saying that" "she breathes through her skin"

Most people will say you can skip the first game. The melee combat is kinda basic, but the whole switching from 3D to top down to side scrolling came from it, as well as the shooting mechanics, and was not just part of that Platinum touch. Automata has a lot of references you might wouldn't appreciate without prior knowledge. If you're just interested for the Platinum combat, you aren't missing out, but if you're ever considering playing both, do the first one, its also much much easier and faster to complete than its sequel and in my personal opinion, a story worth experiencing.
