The mention of Lilo & Stitch made me want to bring up this story about its creator, Chris Sanders (who also voices Stitch).

So keen Disney observers might notice Stitch's role and presence in Disney media has been reduced and sort of phased out, despite being a historically popular IP and the existence of an anime featuring the character (that's licensed and Disney mostly ignores). There's a reason for all of this.

See, Chris Sanders proposed a new movie to Walt Disney Animation with the working title American Dog (production art and test reel stills featured here) about a dog film star who gets kidnapped, wakes up somewhere far from home, and has to get home, all while thinking it's part of a movie or something. There were supporting characters in the form of a one-eyed cat and a radioactive mutant rabbit (or something, Chris Sanders has a style for "cute-but-weird").

Walt Disney Animation execs requested he make changes to the film before giving it a greenlight, and Sanders didn't like this. He was removed from the project and American Dog ultimately morphed into the film Bolt. Chris Sanders, meanwhile, opted to terminate his contract with Disney in response. He would then switch over to Dreamworks where he would create The Croods and How To Train Your Dragon franchises.

This falling out, I strongly suspect, is why Stitch has been marginalized in the years since. Though Sanders has said he'd continue to voice Stitch if needed, evidently Disney would prefer to not see him again.
